Final Day in a Fun way

Our final day at St. Mary’s was full of fun activities. One thing that always get the students excited is the parachute. On this day we were able to have 2 parachutes available to us one very large one and a medium one.
We started off with the large parachute, this way many people would be involved in the activities. Some of the parachutes games that were played were:
-Switcheroos (parachute is lifted up, a color is called, if the student is holding that color they run under the chute and find a nother spot to hold before the parachute falls.)
- Merry go round- ( Various locomotor skills are being performed while traveling in different directions with the parachute) We performed, skipping, sliding, hopping, and walking to the right and left.
- Mushroom- the parachute is lifted up and then pulled down underneath students bottoms so they are sealed inside. This is where information was exchanged about each student. We asked questions to go around their circle like, favorite color, favorite sport, favorite school activity, favorite animals.
- Soup- balls were being thrown into the middle of the parachute and students were saying their favorite soup ingredients, then when the soup was ready to boil over the balls were popped off the parachute!
- Popcorn- multiple balls are thrown on top of the parachute while being shaken (similar to soup game), the objective was to lift the parachute up and then snap it down to the ground and see the balls to flying way up. One variation of this was to try and make a ball into the basketball hoop!
-Sharks and lifeguard- A game where we sat with our feet under the parachute. Some students were assigned roles as sharks (taggers) and lifeguards (savers). If tagged we were “dragged” under and became a shark and got to tag others! The students love being underneath the parachute.
This is when most students left to do other activities so the big parachute was put away and the medium one was brought out for those still wanting to play.
-          Trap the mouse- a student was chosen to be the mouse and crawled under the parachute while being shaken. The parachute was then lifted up and brought down “trapping” the mouse inside.
-          Don’t let in the lion- a student was assigned the role as a lion and the other parachute participates were mice. The parachute was lifted up and brought down underneath the students bottoms leaving the lion student out. The object of the game was to try and cover all the spots so that the lion couldn’t get in the cave to the mice!
When the parachutes were put away, tag games filled up the rest of the day!
Line tag- participants could not leave the lines unless tagged. Once tagged the student has to stand next to the line until someone comes along to let them back on. There was some cunfision wit this game, some students were hopping the liens while other only wanted to play without leaving the line.
Mario tag- when tagged the students had to say “mama mia!” and hold a peace sign to show they were tagged so someone can let them back inot the game.
Chinese temple tag- a classic and always fun to play. When tagged the students had to form Chinese temples with their legs shoulder width apart and arms met together above their heads. The student had to slide underneath the legs of other students to get them unfrozen. This was a challenged because some of the taggers liked to “puppy guard” the tagged players creating more of a challenge.
Crazy pose tag- this went over really well, once the student was tagged they had to stand frozen in a silly pose and hold it until someone set them free. There were some pretty creative poses seen!
Blob tag- brought in more participants. A giant blob chain is formed with the more people tagged. The students strategized by breaking the blob apart to get more students tagged. Then when there was only a few students left the blob came together creating one giant blob and circled around the remaining students so there was so escape from being tagged!
Then it was time to wrap up the day. For spring the bumblebee song was sang with the students. This was a silly song and had funny dance moves for the students to join in with. Finally the last of our St. Mary’s cheers was done. This is a great way to end a great experience at St. Mary’s I am grateful or all that I have learned here and all of the wonderful students who helped me learn to be a better teacher.
THANKYOU ST. MARY’S!

Exercise + Game = EXERGAMEING!

Video games have had a bad rep in the past. It was said that it makes the young lethargic and rots their minds. With Exergames neither is the case! Exergames is a opportunity to stimulate the mind and body while playing a video game! Technology in this area can really make an impact on the face of future PE classrooms. Not only do the games get you moving and having fun, they can be educational as well!
Bringing education in with the physical activity is a huge innovation. This allows the opportunity for students to learn different subject through their movements. The game Hyperdash is an excellent example of this. This is a target tagging race course game. It is a game that can be modified in many ways. It can be set up as a course, where the students would have to run around finding the colors or numbers the Hyper Dash unit calls out. This is a way for youngsters to learn their colors and numbers in a fun and active way! The course can be changed around whenever during game play, having the multicolor pods scattered around their room and students would have to overcome obstacle in order to get to the pod. It is a fun way to learn to be active and even compete to try and beat your fastest score!
PhotoThere are other ways to bring education into the PE classes. For younger students there are foam cut outs and pieces that match up. These can be utilized in PE in a multitude of ways. The only limit to the activity would be your imagination. The students could move around the room trying to find the match to their piece. So many games involving such simple items can be played and with different objectives!
For students who love to go on bike rides there’s an exergame for them too! It is an interactive biking game. The students get to ride their bike and steer to the position they are at one the screen. The screen gives a course with different subjects such as, counting and the alphabet. Now the students are able to bike and learn in the classroom! There is even more to the interactive bike game the course sets up lots of turns and obstacles that need to be avoided. This works on the students cognitive problems solving skills that relate to their movements so they can avoid the obstacles and continue the game.
There are even biking games for the older students as well! Games like these can be  used for any ages.
What about the older students? Of course there are a variety of activities for the upper grade levels.  There is the classic DDR game newly modified to incorporate a whole class’s participation! The class gets to dance as a group grooving to the music and having a good time.
There is another game out that is similar to DDR but upgraded! It is kickboxing to the beat! This great form of exercise while working on timing and coordination.
An idea for using this for other school subjects would be to make a song up about the subject of study and upload it onto the music player and kick box to the beat of the educational song! MOVE GROOVE AND LEARN! Finally a chance to relieve all the built up stresses of school! ;)
These are video games can enhance ones health, mind, and body. Technology is a huge part of our lifes already. Why not make it part of our healthy living?

Birthday Bash at St. Mary's

I was fortuneate enough to spend my birthday with the time of the St. Mary's students. I had a lot of fun and they really made it a birthday to remeber.... :)

To start off the day my group and I were the leaders of the initial gym activities. The subject of today’s activities were, kicking the ball, and stationary dribbling. There was a wide variety of games involved with these skills. First there was the game of “kick the can” modified so that it was kick the pins over instead. The pins were all lined up and the students had a specific starting point. They had to aim in order to kick over the pin and stay controlled. The other student teachers reset up the pins each time they were knocked down. Continuing with the subject of kicking, the next game was a team game. It still involved the kicking skill but this time there were goals involved instead of pins, and some of the students were defenders until they got to switch.

Then we moved onto the skill of dribbling. The first game played was a modified version of “red light green light.” The students were instructed to dribble the basketball from one side of the court to the other while listening to the color of the lights indicating to go, slow, or stop all while dribbling. This went pretty successful. I tried to key in on the important factors of dribbling such as keeping it at waist level, using fingertips to bounce the ball, and keeping their heads up while dribbling to make sure they did not run into anyone else. This was followed by a dual game of kicking and dribbling. This game was set up so that there were goals underneath the basketball hoop and the student were split up into two teams. One of the teams had pinnies and the other did not, this helped clarify who was on what team. The objective of the game was to score points by either shooting a basket or kicking the ball into the goal. There was a catch though the students could not run all the way down the down to score they could only take three steps and they would have to pass it to a team mate. This was a very exciting game and it got lots of involvement, especially when the student teachers joined in.

After they students were done with that game they were able to do whatever activities they would like in the gym. Some wanted to play a game of tag with the student teachers. We played the original freeze tag first but then it was changed to Chinese temple tag. This was a lot of fun and it got a lot of students running around. The students began to get worn down so before the next activity they all grouped and had a water break for a few minutes.

The next activity was in the cafeteria where they had snack and then was able to participate in various activity such as building blocks, coloring book, checkers, and dominos. The students were very creative with what they build. The student teachers had fun building blocks with them as well. It was interesting to see the different concepts each student creates. The ones who were playing with the dominos were creating house layouts originally but then decided to build the blocks up and then topple them down. We even made a few domino tracts and had lots of twists and turns involved. Then cafeteria time came to an end and each of the students helped clean up their messes and other activities.

We were able to return to gym again and resume playing whatever activities they liked. I got to experience a new activity with one of the students practicing for her beauty pageant. She was very eager to show off her talent portion and even help and train others in their pageant walk and wave. It was humorous, especially when she began her strutting, but it was fun so we played along. Her talent portion involved some gymnastics moves, so we found a blue panel mat in the back corner of the gym to practice on. Once other students saw what we were doing they decided to join in. soon there were a couple students showing off their gymnastics skills. I saw students able to perform splits and cartwheels. Then we decided to work on a little routine with leaps, jumps, rolling, and even a couple of handstands and cartwheels. The students loved being able to show off what they could do.

Soon the day came to an end as we all met in the middle of the gym for our closing games. We started with a game of toilet tag. I worked with a preschooler and she loved to run around and flush everybody’s arm to set them free. Once the game was over a fun and silly song was sung that the students seemed to enjoy. Then finally the St. Mary’s goodbye cheer. It was a successful and fun day once again at St. Mary’s.

Jumpin', Stompin', and Shakein' St. Mary's

Colorful Creation:
On this visit to St. Mary’s school my group and I were involved in the Special Projects Group. This entitled us to redecorate the gymnasiums bulletin board. In our creation we included a variety
of sports suitable for the upcoming season, it gives the visual idea the other sports that can be played to stay active and healthy.

Throwing and Catching:
We had to observe the students playing games that focused on them throwing and catching. There was a variety of skills levels seen. Some students were seen having more components of the throw down than others. We even saw a student who was able to throw effectively with both their right and left hand. The game played was very fun for the students, and the TA's looked like they were having fun as well! Students were in the initial, elementary, and a couple could be considered mature in their fundamental throwing skill.

There was a very high level of participating today. Lots of creative games were being played by the other groups; it engaged the students and kept them involved and active throughout the day.

After creating the board we interacted with other students in the gymnasium. My group members and I were involved in various activities, first we played a little catch with the football, then had a soccer trick contest with some of the older boys, I was very impressed with how skilled they were in the sport. I saw successful trapping skills from the students, controlled dribbling, and even juggling the ball by popping it off the ground first!

Afterwards a girl student brought over the long jump rope. This was an exciting activity that mixed older students and younger together. It was fun playing with the students because we were able to learn a new jump rope song taught to us by one of the younger students
Teddy bear jump rope:
Teddy bear, teddy bear, turn around.
Teddy bear, teddy
 bear, ‘touch the ground.
Teddy bear, teddy bear, tie your shoe.
Teddy bear, teddy bear, that will do.
Teddy bear, teddy bear, go upstairs.
Teddy bear, teddy bear, say your prayers.
Teddy bear, teddy bear, turn off the light.
Teddy bear, teddy bear, say goodnight!
Then the rope turners proceeded to count the following number of jumps the student was successful in completing over the rope.
We were even practicing running into the rope and jumping in while it was already moving and had multiple people jumping together at the same time!

After that activity I noticed some students off to the side on a mat sitting and humming. I realized they were practicing meditating and we ended up playing a little made up game that created lots of smiles. The students had to remain in their meditation pose while crazy things were going on around them such as "earthquakes" the mat would slide around, or using string to have them "getting caught by a giant spider.

Towards the end we played rock paper scissors tag which was fun to play with the pre-k and older students. The student teachers assisted with the younger players so they could be involved in the game too.
Afterwards we met in the middle and sang a song. The students though it was a very funny song and there was lots of laughter all around.

Then to conclude our day we thanks St. Mary’s with a fun and loud cheer. The students got to stomp as loud as they could and shake their whole bodies in the cheer stop and shake it.

Debate Day

The Debate held in class was to figure out which curriculum plan was best to include in the schools program. The challengers of the days debate are the Sticks in Sports & PE Enthusiasts, Fitness Education Fanatics, and Skills theme Advocates
The sticks in sports group was the first to present to the board. They had an argument which entailed the use of sticks in their lesson plans to develop the use of these sticks in sports as the child matures and the game played matures. It creates a plan to have the children develop using stick equipment in various sports that can be transferred to learning other stick sports as well.
Next to present was the Skill theme Advocates. Their presentation emphasized the importance of learning the individual developmental skills that make up the play of the sport. By working on games that enhance skills in game play it better transfers from practice to the game time performance.

Finally to present was my group the Fitness education fanatics. Our presentation focused on the importance of lifetime sports. We wanted this to be included with the schools program because of the health benefits starting at childhood all the way throughout life by learning lifetime sports. By participating in these activities it allows the student to be active and healthy in creating their own plans to stay fit and healthy in their lifestyles. The creation of our presentation went very smoothly. Everybody was involved in the project and each had a point to advance our cause.
After all the presentations were complete it was time for questions and rebuttals. This was an intense time in the classroom. Each group was pointing out holes in the plans of other groups. Even though the heat was on in the questioning the rebuttals were clear and had good answered from all of the groups.
The board had time to deliberate and reach the decision of dividing the curriculum between lifetime sports and the fundamental skills of sports. It was a successful ending for our group and a fun day of debate.

Preschool Play

It was a very exciting day returning to St Mary’s school. The theme of the day was sports and many student teachers were getting into the theme wearing their favorite team jerseys to show the students.

My group followed theme as well in the preschool room. Lauren, a group member of mine, brought a craft for the preschoolers to do. It was coloring pages and constructing an “Olympic Medal” all of their own. The preschoolers colored each medal cut out, once finished coloring the students brought their cut out to one of the student teachers in the room to have a ribbon attached to the cut out so it can be worn around the wrist. The preschoolers seemed to enjoy that they could wear their creations and show them off to their friends around the room.

Following the craft activity was story time. I was privileged to read to the preschools during that time. We read the book “Flip and Flop.” This was appropriate because there had been so much snowfall recently and it included a lot of snow activities in the book. The story is about two penguin siblings who play in the snow together a game they created and then was able to share with friends. It was very exciting and the group of students listening to the story got to join in with the story themselves. They liked the reading so much they wanted to hear the story again! I had a lot of fun reading to them.

We got to go into the gym and play a few games next. MK, my group member, started a game that included Jump ropes. This was an activity where the jump ropes were stretched across the floor parallel to each other and had some space between them. The preschoolers were active in participating in this activity because it allowed them to run and jump over objects. Following that was the game Bridges. The preschoolers were confused at first about the game but go the hang of it and enjoyed when the music stopped so they could be caught in the bridge.
After these activities some time was spent with the preschoolers leading the activities. Hula hoops were grabbed and they started some games of their own. Each of my group members and I participated in these activities. Some were playing tag, being chased, or playing hopscotch. It was a fun time and a very successful day.

BAN BANNING GAMES!

Some of the games on that Hall of Shame games for PE are some of my favorite games. They are involvement games. Not everybody is fantastic at “this” sport or “that” skill. Being involved in fun group games gets rid of that self-consciousness of “how am I performing in front of my peers” anxiety. There is a criteria for banning games because it embarrasses some students. Well taking away these games do the same thing! Taking away games of fun and involvement that kids enjoy playing, forces the kids to play other games that they lack interest in, therefore lacking skill in, then boom! The kids STILL end up embarrassed in front of their peers.

I say we keep the classic games, if there is a problem fix it! It takes creativity and imagination. All that needs to be done is a little modification. Who knows how many times the game that is banned has been modified before to get to that point! The focus in my class is having good safe fun. Its simple and classic. Of course I would not involve a game that has safety hazards in it, but I would include a game VERY similar if not the same with a few modern tweaks. If a ball is too hard, make it a softer one, if the game has too many collisions, have the children speed walk or focus on another skill, if the game has children get out have them do something when out in order to get back in! Quick simple easy alterations. I get it, one size does not fit all, but getting rid of it all together.. now that’s a little extreme. Make the change, make the game, modofy, who knows ti could even turn out better than the original!

In order to physically educate someone they have to have interest in it or else it is a lost cause. We can’t force anybody to like something or to change their ways. We can only encourage them that it is for the best. I believe that the games on the banned list definitely have a way of encouragement. Group involvement is something special, especially for those who do not fit in large groups well. It is an excellent excuse to interact with others.

Some of these games are gateway games! As in the skills learned from one of these banned games can be transitioned and applied to other games and ever related to skills and sports. Example: Dodge ball it is a way for students to work on their throwing, catching, aim, agility, strategizing, team communication, and more! These skills can be transitioned between many sports such as handball or baseball. The ball might not be being throw “At” that person but its being thrown “TO” that person. A criticism of this game was that people are targets and that lies the problem. Well what’s the name of the game.. DODGE ball.. if you don’t want to be a target.. MOVE!
Physical education/movement/skills... All of this can be accomplished with fun. Students like to be creative, they like to be destructive, it is a grey area definitely to satisfy everybody. But I think we can continue good, safe, fun with a little creativity so that these games can remain in action for fun for everyone!!

Lab Day 2

We arrived at St. Mary’s prepared and ready to go, so we thought… Previous students are right, you never know what to expect when arriving at the school. That day was beautiful, so naturally the older kids want to go out run and play to enjoy the day. While outside my group and I partook in an intense game of tag with some of the older boys on the playground. Everybody was running around and having a fun time. My entire group member and I had expected to be inside and play the games we had prepared for the day. Since we were outside and the kids just wanted to enjoy their chance to monkey around, we decided it would be better to wait on the games until we were back inside.

One of our group members had the opportunity to try out their game on the group of boys. It was a Valentine’s Day themed game and they were not enthused about playing. Regardless when they did decide to join in the game everybody was laughing and smiling. That is what I aim for when with these students, I want them to enjoy their time there and have fun. So when I arrive at the school next lab I hope to make a great impression on the students so they know we are all here to have a good time.

Working with the students is tricky at times because at the time when we want to work on developing their skills they want to go off and do something else. I know we are not going to always get everybody to participate but we are here to help and to try to have everybody get a fun learning experience and build up a few skills along the way. Early on in the day we observed some of the student’s skills such as running, hopping, and galloping. We focused on what they were doing in their movements and compared it to the proper technique needed for that skill. The skill level varies with age and grade. Sometime the skill was completely obsolete because the students were so enthralled with the game they were just having fun participating in it. I think that is completely understandable, we encourage learning, but never losing site that we also encourage fun!

Predator Problem

Over the last couple of days in class we have had the experience of being educated with the rising problems of child predators. Adults’ sexually abusing children is wrong and it traumatically affects the life of the child and their families. This is a serious problem with very negative consequences. There are ways to prevent it. The main prevention method is recognition of the warning signs. We always want to protect the children, keep them in a safe environment. This environment should always be supervised, and a child should never be alone with an adult at any time. There is to much opportunity for predators to strike when children go unsupervised.
If there are suspicions of a potential predator do not hesitate. When there is delay there is more opportunity for that predator to harm the child. We learned the necessary steps during one of these situations, such as calling a hot-line specified for this problem. Here there will be people to guide the necessary steps that must be taken. I appreciate the fact that time was taken to educate us about this growing problem and I would highly recommend that is continues to get the message out there to keep the children safe.

St. Mary's Lab 1

We had our first day at St. Mary's school. This certainly was an experience. Although we did not go into the day as the teachers our group was able to comprehend was is expected from us this semester. The TA's did a great job starting off the day; everybody was participating and having a good time. The games that were played had a focus on certain motor skills; some kids had more developed skills than others. The older students were focused and determined to win, while the younger students were flailing their limbs all over the place but still having a good time running around with their friends. As the day went on the groups participating in the TA’s activities got smaller and smaller. As you look around the room the children have dispersed themselves amongst various activities with their peers. The older boys were mainly playing basketball and knock out. The older girls were doing activities such as hula hooping or tag or coloring while they could talk to their friends about their day. Each of the kids has a story to tell… always. The youngsters liked to stick around  with all the TA’s and new student teachers and play more interactive games. The younger boys liked to sped time with the male Student teachers because they liked to relate, same with girls the younger girl spent most of their  time with  a female student teacher before running  off with their friends.  We learned that our main focus is to try to keep  the students participating together as much as  possible. With that goal and focus I think this is going to be a fun semester working with St. Mary’s school students. We are all there to have a good time.

Affective Growth

Affective Growth, also known as social-emotional development is learning that increases the ability of children to act, interact, and react, and it is of the utmost importance to childrens learning process. The impact of physical activity on affective growth is vital in that it dictates our choices of hobbies for example, of whether to go outside and play or hang out and watch tv. Considering the level of physical activity incorperated into the childs environment, we are lead to belive that our surroundings dictate how physically active we are.

Learning Through the Physical

Learning through the physical means educating a child in daily physical activity to impact the students in a cognitive and affective manner. It is believed that to achieve the precision of the mature brain, stimulation in the form of movement and sensory experiences during the early developing years is necessary. Ultimately, there is proof that our lives as adults are dictated by our education as children.

I will, I hope, I believe

I will be an enthusiastic, informative, and fun physical educator. In my time as a teacher, I will make my focus the increase and maintenance of physical health through physical activities and a healthy diet.
I hope my students will take activities learned from class into their daily lifestyle as a means of keeping themselves in good health, as well as using team and group sports as building blocks for the social aspects of life.
I believe that activities are more for staying active and having fun than competition. The role of competition in sports is to me a catalyst for encouraging the participation of individuals in group activities.

About PED 201

I am so excited to begin the first teaching block for the PE program at SUNY Cortland. PED 201 helps further student’s career paths and goals. This is done by creating an online portfolio of our work and what we did to develop ourselves as educators. In this class we have to create social media profiles, such as on Blogger and Twitter, to put ourselves out into the cyber world and make ourselves known. This is an effective method I believe because it helps organize all of our hard work as educators into a convenient and easily locatable spot for even future employers to see. Not many people know what students have to do to learn how to become an effective Physical Educator. By using social media networks we have the opportunity to educate those people in what actually happens behind the scenes of learning what we do.

My Winter Break '11-'12

So this is my first blog… bear with me I have never done this before. I suppose I have never really made the time for it, but hey, everybody has to start somewhere right? So let’s start things off right shall we?

My name is Kendra Skinner and I am a Physical Education Major at SUNY Cortland. We have just recently returned from our Winter Break which I did not get much of a break at all…

I spent the last month staying occupied with a multitude of different things. For starters I had the opportunity to start a new job. This great opportunity was presented to me by Greek Peak Mountain Resort working as a Ski instructor. I have been skiing ever since 4th grade in elementary school ski club. I try to get to a mountain every winter to ski. So when the opportunity was open to actually work on a mountain for the winter, I could not pass it up!
In the past I have only worked in fast food because it was the only jobs available at the time. I was definitely nervous to start this new job because of the fact it was so different from what I was used to. Thankfully in order to get the job I had to attend a series of training sessions to meet Greek Peak’s ski instructor standards.
Here I met lots of new people and friends. The best part was every one of them was willing to lend a hand and any information that could help me become a better instructor. Every tid-bit I learned and teaching tricks I could pull out of my pocket helped me become a more efficient instructor. Now I am able to give a successful skiing lesson that is effective and informative thanks to the great people of Greek Peak who trained me and helped me to get to this point. I am happy to have this job because it is full of opportunities. Even though I have already completed my training, Greek Peak offers many other clinics that can help me further enhance my teaching techniques. I love teaching and I love being able to gain more helpful knowledge along the way.
By starting work here I got a opprotunity too work with many ski students of all ages. I learned that teaching adults is much different than teaching children. While working with so many different people all day long it gives me opprotunities to try new teaching methods and cues to further advance each of my students.I like to bring enthusiasm to my class so that everyone can enjoy what we are doing together.

While all of that craziness was going on I was still able to attend two winter session courses to gain 2 credits to further my education. Rhythms and Dance was one class, followed by Self- Defense. These classes were so much fun I could not believe I was going to school. I learned a lot of new techniques from each class and overall had a fun time doing it. Learning Rhythms and Dance brings that creative and social element to any student's life, and learning Self Defencse is beneficial for safety situations in life.

Even though I did not really get a break from the craziness of life, I sure am grateful for the time and opportunities I had over this time. So lets cheer for the New Year of 2012 and hope many new opportunities arise!

:)
